Man Utd romp to victory

Man Utd romp to victory

06 October 2007 - 16:21

Sir Alex Ferguson's men romped to a 4-0 victory today over Wigan Athletic. It took a little while for Man Utd to get into fifth gear, but once they were there Man Utd looked unstoppable. Carlos Tevez opened the scoring (53), before a Cristiano Ronaldo (58, 75) brace and Wayne Rooney header (81) confounded Wigan’s misery and moved United to top spot in the league.

  • Predicted Chelsea line-up (4-2-3-1) vs Aston Villa, Palmer starts
  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Villa trip

  • It was an unfamiliar side for Man Utd, as Pique came in at right back while John O'Shea the utility man moved into centre midfield.

Nemanja Vidic left the field early with concussion from a challenge with lone-forward Marcus Bent. As Anderson replaced him, O’Shea underlined his versatility by switching to centre-half, but to Ferguson’s amazement he too was soon bought off with a thigh injury. The two injuries will undoubtedly bother Sir Alex with an ever growing injury list.

The first half was very ordinary and Jason Koumas was the ray of light for a disappointing Wigan side, while Man Utd struggled to find a way through a resolute Wigan defence.

The rampant Red Devils won four corners within two minutes as they pressed for the opening goal, and on the 53rd minute the pressure paid off as Tevez raced through from an Anderson through-ball to put the ball in the net.

Wigan then began to fold - inevitably - and the goals kept coming. Ryan Giggs found Tevez, whose flick-on was parried out by Kirkland, but only to Ronaldo who headed in from 5 yards out. Ronaldo rarely gets headed goals and his celebration showed it too.

In the 75th minute Ronaldo scored another well-crafted goal to make it 3-0. Rooney brilliantly raced onto a Pique through ball into the left channel, drove the ball into the box for Ronaldo to tap the ball home elegantly.

Rooney later goal the goal he deserved, added to his earlier two assists. Danny Simpson overlapped on the flank before putting a great cross right onto the head of an unmarked Wayne Rooney, who headed home from 5 yards.

It was an excellent result for Man Utd, who broke a club record for six consecutive clean sheets. Man Utd go to top of the league and could stay there if Arsenal fail to pick up a point in their match at Sunderland tomorrow.
