Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler could be on his way out of the club, with contract negotiations stalling.

The 26 year old shot stopper is currently injured and had to undergo a patellar tendon surgery in July, which will keep him out of action for six months.

According to Bild, the Leverkusen board are impressed by the performances of on-loan Stuttgart keeper Bernd Leno, and wish to sign him on a permanent basis.

"We want to keep him," Bayer Leverkusen CEO Wolfgang Holzhauser said to Bild.

Adler was offered a new three year contract last season with a €400000 annual pay rise. However, he rejected this deal and now is being offered only a one year extension with an increase of €200000 to his current €2.4 million contract.

It seems as if the board are willing to cash in on one of their stars, especially since Leno has a buy out clause of only €5 million.

Leno himself seems keen at staying beyond his loan term. He said, "I've read that [Stuttgart sporting director] Fredi Bobic said that I must come back. But Bayer [Leverkusen] play in the Champions League, Stuttgart don't. I can imagine staying here."
