Man Utd boss defends Ferdinand 1-year offer

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has defended his decision to offer Rio Ferdinand a one year extension to his contract, insisting that the 34-year-old can go on to be a first team regular even next year.

Ferguson has shown that veteran players can still have an impact at Old Trafford, such as Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes in recent seasons. Many reporters were surprised that SAF only offered the former England centre back a one year deal.


"There is nothing wrong with us giving players one-year contracts," he said. "Players with the reputation and ability of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand should not worry about that.


 "It is quite straightforward. It is not to say we doubt them but it is natural you never know how they cope with getting older. Some do, some don't."
