Pep Guardiola Steps Up Interest In David Luiz

The newly appointed manager at the Allianz Arena, Pep Guardiola, has made Chelsea’s David Luiz a hot summer target for the club. Luiz’s future at the Stamford Bridge has been heavily debated and with the defender drawing interest from so many big clubs, it wouldn’t be a total surprise if he leaves the club this summer.

The UEFA Champions League winners were earlier reluctant to make an offer for the Brazilian but Guardiola has reportedly been Luiz’s fan since his days at Barcelona. He has figured out that the German outfit need to improve in the defence, following their recent 4-2 defeat against domestic rivals Borussia Dortmund.

It had been reported earlier that Guardiola is looking to place a bid of £34.5m for the talented defender. The 26-year-old joined the Europa League champions in January 2011 for £25m from Benfica. Last September, he agreed to renew his contract with the club for another five years which leads to the speculation that Chelsea would demand in excess of £40m for the defender.

The defender is also being monitored by the La Liga Champions Barcelona. According to Sport, the club could make a move for Luiz if they fail to bring Thiago Silva from PSG.

Despite heavy interest from so many clubs, Jose Mourinho insists he has no intentions of letting the defender go. He affirmed his faith in Luiz by saying,

“The potential is incredible, amazing”

"He always has to play. For me he is a central defender."
