Arsenal complete Mathieu Flamini transfer

Arsenal have wrapped up a deal to sign Mathieu Flamini on a two year contract. The player rejoins his former club and arrives from Italian club AC Milan, who failed to agreed a new contract with the French midfielder.

Flamini enjoyed a successful spell with the Gunners between 2004 and 2008, playing in over 100 games for Arsene Wenger's side. The player then left the Emirates for AC Milan on a free transfer.

The return of the 29-year-old will surprise many, with fans expecting that Arsenal would've moved for a higher profile midfield signing as opposed to the free transfer of Flamini. With a recent injury to Mikel Arteta and the ongoing injury issues of Abou Diaby, the signing of Flamini could be a shrewd one by the Gunners.

"We’re very pleased Mathieu has agreed to re-join us," Arsène Wenger said. "He is a player of real quality, with a fantastic work rate and great mentality. As we know, Mathieu is a strong midfielder, but is also is comfortable playing in defence too. He is a very good addition to our squad."
