Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has hinted that he will be spending as soon as the January transfer market reopens. The Black Cats have been linked with a host of new players and are reportedly looking for a centre back as their top priorirty.

With Sunderland currently languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table, the club will be looking to move quickly in January

"My aim all the time is to do things quickly in January," said Poyet.

"We're having meetings practically every day and we're getting close to January now.

"January 1st is a Wednesday, it's not on the weekend, so if there are not any problems with bringing them in from abroad, they could be signed that day."

Poyet did admit that whilst he is in charge of transfer responsibilities, chairman Craig Short is also likely to be involved: "Those are the things you need to manage. But it's not only in my hands. It's in the hands of the other people as well - the player, the other club, the transfer, the agreement and if there are other options. There are so many things involved.

"Now, as the manager, I want them in tomorrow so they could train with us for a week before the first. That would be perfection."
