The FA have confirmed that each week Michael Owen is out of action, they will be paying Newcastle £100,000. The Newcastle striker picked up an injury during the match against Austria.

“The FA takes out policies to cover for injuries sustained on international duty," said an FA spokesman.

Owen has been injured while playing with England against Austria in Vienna last friendly.

The 27-year old striker picked a thigh injury and will be out of action for at least four weeks.

Under the terms of their insurance, The English FA covers the clubs over the players’ wages up to a maximum of 100,000 pounds per week in case of injuries suffered with the National team.

"This figure can be up to £100,000 a week but it is not the FA who pay this money out, it is our insurers, if they deem it is fit to do so."
