Man Utd favourites to sign World Cup winner

Manchester United are reportedly in pole position to secure the services of one of the best defenders from the Bundesliga.

The Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is believed to be a huge fan of Borussia Dortmund's Mat Hummels, and has listed the talented centre-back as one of his prime targets to strengthen the club's back-line this season.

According to The Metro, the Mancunian giants have beaten Barcelona in the race for the German international's signature, and the £16m deal is expected to be completed by this week.

United are also closing in on a deal for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen.
