Advocaat quits Black Cats job

Sunderland have confirmed that Dick Advocaat has stepped down from his managerial role by mutual consent.

The 68-year-old joined the Black Cats in March and guided the club to a position of safety in the Premier League.

He followed up by signing a new one-year deal with the Black Cats and many expected him to repeat a similar feat.

However, his second spell at Wearside has been a huge disappointment with the club lingering in the relegation places despite spending in the transfer window.

Black Cats have now announced that Advocaat has called quits on his head coach role following a dismal show which saw them register just three draws and five defeats in the league this term.

"I want to thank everyone who has stood behind me. This is a very special football club, with so many great people, but I feel it is the right time to do this - not for me, but for the club," Advocaat told the club's official website.

Sunderland are currently 19th in the league standings.
