Where next for Carrick?
Where next for Carrick?
Michael Carrick’s trophy laden ten year spell looks like it is coming to an end this summer and if it does where will be his next destination?
If he does leave Old Trafford he will be an attractive proposition for many Premier League clubs especially as he has no transfer fee and he is a proven winner and has played at the highest level for Manchester United and England.
Lets look at some of his potential Premier League options:
1. Everton
Roberto Martinez is interested in the Newcastle born Carrick and would see him as the man who can be his lynchpin in midfield if this is Gareth Barry’s final season at Goodison Park, Carrick will appeal to the Everton board on a free transfer but with new investment imminent perhaps they will focus elsewhere.
2. West Ham
Carrick could be returning home, well nearly as West Ham will relocate to the Olympic Stadium by the time the ink on this transfer has dried. Carrick could prefer a move back to London where he lived through his early career with the Hammers and Spurs and the history making season for West Ham in their new home could be a big pull for him.
3. Arsenal
Wenger is a known admirer of Carrick and was interested in him before he left West Ham for Tottenham in 2004, also Arsene loves a bargain and Carrick being a free transfer will appeal to him and being a like for like for Arteta. Champions League football could pull him towards the Gunners.
4. Tottenham
Another former club could be interested in Carrick, again a return to London, Champions League football (or at least it seems) and to work under the highly thought of Pochettino who could use an older, wiser head in a very young squad.
Perhaps an outside bet would be Newcastle United, boyhood club and a chance for a final swan song there could be attractive but with some of the uncertainty there it may not be an option…
