Materazzi: the five keys to Mourinho's success

Former Italian international defender Marco Materazzi has detailed the five secrets to Manchester United manager José Mourinho’s success, according to reports in Italy.

Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport have printed an interview with former Everton defender Marco Materazzi, in which the 2006 World Cup winner explained the five factors that he believes are behind the success José Mourinho has enjoyed throughout his career.

Materazzi, who worked under Mourinho at Inter Milan, listed the five factors as: “Drive, cleverness, knowledge, experience and empathy.”

The former defender then went on to provide detail on just how the Manchester United manager has applied these five key principles in his managerial career.

Mourinho is a two time Champions League winner, having lifted the famous trophy with both FC Porto and Inter, and has won top division titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss is not hoping to achieve similar success with United, having replaced Louis van Gaal in charge at Old Trafford in June. And the Portuguese coach faces his toughest test since taking the reins at Old Trafford when Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City visit on Saturday (10 September).

Mourinho and Guardiola were at opposite ends of a bitter rivalry during their times in charge of Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively, and all eyes with be on the dugout as the two face off for the first time in the Premier League.
