Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian could be set for a Serie A loan return to Inter Milan in January, according to reports in Italy.

Italian sports newspaper Corriere dello Sport is reporting that Inter Milan president Piero Ausilio has hinted that Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian could be set to join the Nerazerri on loan when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Darmian has struggled to make an impact for United since Jose Mourinho took charge at Old Trafford, making only one appearance this season and often not even being selected in the match day squads.

And the Italian international has been linked with a return to Serie A for some time, with many reports surfacing in the summer that AC Milan, Napoli and Roma were all interested in signing Darmian, but no move materialised.

Now, with the January window the next available opportunity for Darmian to eascape his Old Trafford struggled, both AC Milan and Inter Milan are being linked with a loan move for the defender.

Darmian signed for United for £14 million from Torino in the summer of 2015.

The 26-year-old made a string of impressive performances in his initial outings for the Red Devils, but his form began to tail off and he became an peripheral figure towards the end of last season.

And this season, under Mourinho, Antonio Valencia has been made the first choice right-back, with Timothy Fosu-Mensah as back up.
