Petition Launched To Reinstate Pie Eating Goalkeeper
A petition has been launched to reinstate the Sutton United reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw, who became an unlikely superstar during his team's FA Cup run, but has since resigned due to a pie eating betting scandal.
Shaw, 46, had become a symbol of Sutton United's great success during this season's FA Cup, in the run up to the match against Arsenal he was appearing in the media on a daily basis. The veteran epitomized everything that is great about the competition, taking normal people, and giving them an opportunity against the best in the world. The controversy came when an online bookmaker joined in the focus on Shaw, by offering a market that would see the goalkeeper eating a pie when sat in the dugout. True to his comical personality, Shaw was seen doing exactly that during the second half of the Arsenal match. Following the game, Shaw admitted that he was aware of the market, and that people he knew may have bet on it. This has lead to the FA and the Gambling Commission to conduct an investigation to see if there was a breach of betting regulations.
The goalkeeper, who also had a range of other jobs at the club, including sweeping the artificial pitch prior to kick off, has now resigned from his position, in the interest of Sutton United. The club manager Paul Doswell has admitted that "He's made a bad error of judgement", however, it has caused many to claim that the heart and sense of humour has been stripped from the game.
Following the resignation, a petition has been set up by fans, with the aim of getting Shaw reinstated to his former position, At the time of writing, the petition has received 1793 signatures.
