Barcelona complete unbelievable comeback

Barcelona and PSG produced a Champions League classic on Wednesday night

Barcelona completed a sensational turnaround, beating Paris Saint Germain 6-1 to overturn their four goal deficit from the first leg of the Champions League round of sixteen. No team has ever progressed in the knockout stages of this competition after losing by four or more goals in the first leg.

After losing 4-0 in Paris in the first leg, nobody expected Barcelona to progress to the next round, despite all of the quality that they have within their ranks. The home team knew that if PSG scored a single goal, they would require six goals to qualify for the quarter finals.

Just three minutes into the game, Luis Suarez gave Barcelona just the start they needed when his effort crossed the line before the PSG defenders could scramble it away. The home team now had 87 minutes to overcome a three goal deficit. By half time, Barcelona had scored a second, when some persistence in the box from Iniesta resulted in an own goal from Kurzawa.

Just three minutes into the second half, Lionel Messi made it 3-0 from the penalty spot after Neymar was tripped just inside the area. As Barcelona were fully in command and looked set to level up the tie, PSG finally threatened to score. First, Edison Cavani slid in to get on the end of a cross, only to see it hit the post. Shortly after however, a PSG counter attack ended with Cavani volleying home from the edge of the box, 5-3 to PSG on aggregate.

With 87 minutes on the clock, and Barcelona needing three goals, all hope for the home side seemed to be extinct. Neymar struck a sweet free kick from the left side of the penalty box to make the score 4-1 on the night. Barcelona continued to attack, and were awarded another penalty when Luis Suarez went down after slight contact. Neymar stepped up and finished calmly, meaning that with five minutes of stoppage time to play, Barcelona needed just one more goal.

Deep into stoppage time, with all eleven Barcelona players attacking, a chip over the top of the PSG defence was finished off by Sergi Roberto, who beat the offside trap to finish brilliantly.

With seven goals, stoppage time drama and one of the biggest turnarounds in the history of the competition, this match will go down as a Champions League classic.
