Arsene Wenger admits Riyad Mahrez interest

Mahrez on Arsene Wenger radar

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted that he is interested in pursuing the services of Leicester City's Riyad Mahrez following a failed approach last year.

The Algeria international enjoyed a top campaign with the Foxes during the 2015/16 season as his 17 goals guided the club to a maiden Premier League title.

However, he failed to come up with a similar showing last term as he bagged just six goals en route to a disappointing season for the east Midlands club.

In an interview with BeIN Sports, Wenger has confirmed that the 26-year-old is indeed in his transfer shortlist, but his club have yet to lodge an attempt to pursue his signature.

"We have not made a bid, but personally, I like the player, yes," Wenger told beIN Sports. "I think he made a huge impact when they won the championship."

The long-standing manager also felt that a single season would not determine the overall quality of the player, and this makes him a viable target for Arsenal ahead of this summer's transfer window.

Mahrez had been the subject of a £35m bid from the FA Cup holders last term before he committed his future to Leicester on a new four-year deal.

He has, however, recently released a statement stating his desire to move on after helping the club through a somewhat transition phase following a miraculous league run.
