Former Premier League star passes away
Former Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote has passed away today at the age of 30 after collapsing during a training session with his club in China. The former Ivory Coast man made over 150 appearances for The Magpies during his time there and left the club just four months ago.
Spokesman Emanuele Palladino announced, "It is with deep sadness I confirm that Cheick Tiote sadly passed away earlier today after collapsing in training." Tiote's family have understandably asked for privacy at such a sad time, as they come to terms with such an unexpected loss.
After joining Newcastle United in 2010 for £3.5 million from FC Twente, Tiote became a big fan favourite with the St James' Park faithful. He will be best remembered by Premier League fans for his late equalising volley against Arsenal in the 4-4 classic in 2011.
Upon hearing the news, Newcastle United released a statement saying "We are devastated to have learnt of the tragic passing of Cheick Tiote at the age of just 30. The thoughts of everyone at Newcastle United are with Cheick's family, friends, team-mates and everyone connected with the clubs he represented."
