Manchester United are reportedly plotting an approach to sign Diego Godin from Atletico Madrid with Jose Mourinho keen to strengthen the central defensive department.

The Portuguese tactician has pursued the likes of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof in the previous two summer transfer windows but he is still said to be eyeing an experienced centre-back in the ranks.

As a result, Godin has propped up the shortlist after his impressive performances at the World Cup finals in Russia and AS suggests that the Uruguayan could potentially leave Atleti during the summer transfer window.

Godin presently has just a year on his existing deal with the Spanish giants and it is suggested that a fee of around £18m could tempt the Capital outfit to part ways with the 32-year-old.

Juventus have also been linked with a potential move for the central defender, who spent three seasons with Villareal prior to joining the Europa League holders in August 2010.
