Newcastle United are reportedly close to acquiring the signature of Salomon Rondon from West Bromwich Albion after the Venezuelan was left out of the Baggies squad for the Championship opener.

Earlier last month, the Magpies were said to have reached an impasse in negotiations for the striker but according to The Star, they remain confident that a deal could be struck before the transfer deadline.

It is added that Dwight Gayle is likely to head to the Hawthorns as part of the agreement with the Englishman recently being excluded from the squad for the Magpies' friendly against Augsburg.

Newcastle have so far signed five players during the summer transfer window with Yoshinori Muto being their latest recruit following his move from German side Mainz.

Rafael Benitez's side had genuine concerns in the scoring department last term but the arrival of Rondon alongside Muto should improve their prowess in front of goal next term.
