UEFA make VAR decision

UEFA has made a decision to allow the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the Champions League, starting from next season.

According to Sky Sports, VAR will be used from the play-off stage until the end of the competition.

It will also be used in the 2019 Super Cup, Euro 2020, the Europa League from 2020/21 and the Nations League finals in 2021.

The UEFA executive committee made the decision at a meeting in Switzerland early on Thursday.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said, Sky Sports reports: "We are confident that introducing video assistant referees in August 2019 will give us enough time to put in place a robust system and to train match officials to ensure an efficient and successful implementation of VAR in the UEFA Champions League, the world's flagship club competition."

The VAR brings a lot of drama to the game, and though some may complain about it, the technology definitely ensures a high level of precision in the decision making of a referee.

Having decided to trail the VAR in the Premier League this season, the technology is yet to be fully accepted in England, but it is only a matter of time before it is used for every game.
