Tottenham are in line to beat Arsenal to the signing of Atlanta United attacking midfielder Miguel Almiron, according to a report.

Paraguay radio station Futbol a lo Grande claim that Spurs now head the queue for the 24-year-old, who has caught the eye of several big guns throughout Europe.

Earlier this month Arsenal were claimed to be leading the chase with Fox Deportes USA claiming the Gunners had wrapped up a deal for Almiron to arrive in January.

Atlanta’s president Darren Eales laughed off claims of an £11million bid, he told the 92.9 The Game radio show: “So there were two clues as to why that was total nonsense, one was Eagles, not Eales.

“And the other was the suggestion of £11m because it would have to take at least triple that for me to even get out of bed and think about any bids for Almiron.

“So everyone knew, as soon as they saw that figure, that it was a load of rubbish.”

Now though this latest report suggests a £22million bid will be enough to land the Paraguayan – still some way short of the £30million plus Eales has put forward.

Eales suggested that £11m was nowhere near enough to land Almiron, describing it as “way, way light, absolutely”.

Almiron has 13 caps for Paraguay, and has also drawn the attention of Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund after scoring 12 goals and adding 13 assists in his 33 games in the US this season.

The former Cerro Porteno and Lanus No.10 will finish the MLS season later this month, after the play-offs and Spurs are understood to be working on a deal to get Almiron into the club in January.
