Manchester United have reportedly failed with a world-record defender bid worth £91.3m to prise Kalidou Koulibaly away from Napoli in the New Year.

United boss Jose Mourinho has earmarked the need for a new central defender at the turn of the year after having failed to strengthen the position during the summer.

Owing to this, a number of players have been linked with the Old Trafford club and among those, Koulibaly has been highlighted as the prime option to fulfil the void.

However, according to Corriere dello Sport, a deal appears far from happening at the moment with United understood to have failed with an offer of around £93m for the former Genk man.

Koulibaly only signed a fresh five-year contract with the Naples outfit earlier in the season and it is understood that owner Aurelio de Laurentiis has no desire to part ways with the Senegalese in the forthcoming transfer window at any price.
