Arsenal emerge as surprise candidates to sign Ajax star
Arsenal have emerged as surprise contenders to secure the signature of in-demand defender Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax at the end of the campaign.
The Dutchman is currently attracting interest from some of Europe's elite with Barcelona deemed to be leading the race to acquire his signature in the summer.
However, according to The Sun, the Gunners could lodge a surprise attempt to sign the teenager with him working in close quarters with Arsenal favourites Dennis Bergkamp and Marc Overmars at Ajax.
It is added that the 19-year-old has been a strong admirer of the Gunners since his childhood days, though it remains to be seen whether the club are capable of matching Ajax's £70m price tag for his services.
Gunners boss Unai Emery is likely to be handed with a restricted £40m budget for the summer but the Spaniard may recoup additional funds from the probable sales of Mesut Ozil and Shkodran Mustafi.
De Ligt has made nearly 100 appearances for Ajax since his debut in 2016.
