United fail with opening Koulibaly bid

Manchester United are reported to have made a club-record £95m bid to sign Kalidou Koulibaly but the offer has been swiftly rejected by Napoli.

The Senegal international is regarded as one of the best defenders in European football and he has been linked with a Premier League move in the past few years.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Mancunian giants are said to have placed a £95m bid on the table for the central defender but Napoli have rebuffed the offer.

It is added that the Serie A side are willing to consider the sale of the defender this summer, only if one of the suitors are willing to match the player's £110m release clause.

Manchester United finished in a disappointing sixth place in the recent Premier League season and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been backed to reinforce the defence, which has been the major weak point.

The Red Devils conceded more than 50 goals during the recent league campaign and that is their worst-ever defensive showing in a single season for more than three decades.
