Giggs feels Fernandes is not suited to CDM role

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has said that he has concerns over the defensive abilities of Bruno Fernandes and the Portuguese could be better served playing higher up the field.

The 25-year-old made his United debut during the 0-0 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford where he played in both the attacking and defensive midfield roles.

Fernandes was quite comfortable from the number 10 spot in the first half where he showed glimpses of his quality but following the interval, he was shifted into a holding position.

The Portugal international did not present the same level of confidence playing in a more defensive role and he happened to commit a few fouls while also losing possession of the ball.

Speaking on Premier League productions, Giggs said that Fernandes must work out on his best position for the Red Devils and does not believe the midfielder is suited to the defensive work.

"You saw glimpses of the quality he does possess. I think it might need a bit of working out what his best position is. When he's a little bit deeper, defensively, he may be a bit of a liability," he told.

Fernandes had a relatively decent pass percentage of 80 for the game, as per whoscored. He played through the 90 minutes for the Red Devils, where he had five attempts on goal.
