Former Manchester United star Robin van Persie has urged the Red Devils to land the services of Edinson Cavani on a free transfer when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain concludes in the summer.

The Uruguay international was regarded as a possible target for United during the winter transfer window but they were put off by Les Parisiens' £16m price tag and Cavani's £360,000-a-week demands.

Cavani was thereafter fancied to make the move to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid before the transfer deadline but that did not happen as he declined to take a paycut on his salary.

Speaking exclusively to SportBible, Van Persie has now suggested that United should land a top marksman in the summer and they should go for the services of Cavani irrespective of his age.

Cavani has recently turned 33 but Van Persie believes the Uruguayan has proved himself at the highest level and would assure United with 25 goals a season, if he is a regular starter.

"Edinson Cavani. I would definitely go for Cavani. He’s very fit, he’s a proven goalscorer, a goal machine, he has proven it at Napoli, PSG and Uruguay. With him, if he starts, he will get you 25 goals a season," he told.
