Chelsea announce contract extension for experienced star
Olivier Giroud will remain with Chelsea for the 2020/21 campaign after the club decided to trigger the 12-month extension clause on his contract.
The Frenchman has played second fiddle to Tammy Abraham for most of the season but he was able to impress before the coronavirus shutdown, where he featured regularly from the starting XI.
The injury to Abraham contributed to the decision but he managed to keep his place ahead of Michy Batshuayi by finding the back of the net on a few occasions.
Earlier last month, it was revealed by Goal.com that he had signed an extension until June 2021 and the same has now been formally announced by the west London giants.
"I am delighted to continue my journey and adventure at Chelsea," Giroud told the club's official website. "I can’t wait to get back to playing and enjoying competitive football with my team-mates."
Giroud may not receive the assurance of regular playing time when Abraham returns to full fitness and reports claim that the club could sign another striker to compete for the spot.
As a result, the Frenchman could potentially become the third-choice marksman ahead of next season and it remains to be seen whether he will remain content if such a situation arises.
