Chelsea are looking into a deal for RB Leipzig's Timo Werner as manager Frank Lampard aims to bring in a top-class striker to lead the line next season.

The west London side have made no signings over the past two transfer windows but they have an agreement in place to sign Ajax's Hakim Ziyech at the end of the campaign.

According to ESPN, the Blues had identified Lyon's Moussa Dembele as their prime target to strengthen their strikeforce but the £60m valuation could hinder their prospects of landing the marksman.

Hence, they are looking into alternative options and it is claimed that Werner, who has a £50m release clause on his contract, has emerged as the next target for the west London side.

While Lampard would provide Werner the guarantee of a regular starting berth, it is suggested that the German is leaning towards a move to Liverpool in the next transfer window.

So far, Jurgen Klopp's side have not made a formal approach to sign him due to the financial constraints over the coronavirus pandemic. This could put the Blues in a better position to lure the forward to Stamford Bridge.

Werner is currently enjoying his best-ever season and he has bagged 31 goals and 12 assists from 40 appearances for Leipzig. He has more than three years remaining on his contract.
