AS Roma have reportedly proposed to extend the loan contract of defender Chris Smalling for another season with the option to buy.

The 30-year-old has been with the Giallorossi since the beginning of the current season, but he is due to return to Old Trafford on August 2.

United obviously don't want Smalling to be involved against them in the Europa League, but it appears that Roma are prepared to negotiate his stay.

According to Football Italia, the Giallorossi are eager to keep him for next season and they will propose to sign him on another loan deal.

It is added that they are prepared to pay around £2.5m for the temporary stay with an additional £13.4m to make the move permanent next summer.

It is unclear whether United will accept the proposal, given it has been previously claimed that they want at least £22m for Smalling's sale.

Smalling has made 32 appearances in all competitions for Roma this term.
