Newcastle to rival Manchester United for right-back?

Kieran Trippier news

Man Utd target Trippier wanted by Newcastle

Newcastle United could compete with Manchester United in the race to sign Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier.

The Englishman was fancied to return to the Premier League this summer amid interest from Arsenal and United.

The latter were touted as favourites to sign him, but were put off by Atletico Madrid's demands for his services.

The Spanish club were reluctant to negotiate, and wanted the Red Devils to pay the £34m release clause in full.

According to The Mirror, the Mancunian giants are likely to return for Trippier when the transfer window reopens.

Trippier will soon enter the final 18 months of his contract, and it is claimed that Atletico may be willing to negotiate.

United are likely to face stiff competition this time with the Magpies weighing up an offer of their own for Trippier.

The Magpies are currently rooted to the bottom of the table, and the new Saudi owners are expected to spend significantly.

While they would ideally prefer to wait until next summer, their precarious position could see them go on a winter spending spree.

Trippier is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, but he is likely to return to training before the beginning of the New Year.
