Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is keen on signing Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier in the upcoming transfer window.

Trippier was touted to join Manchester United over the summer, but they were put off by the transfer demands of the Spanish champions.

Atletico wanted United to pay the £34m release clause in full which cooled their interest before the summer transfer deadline.

According to The Sun, the Red Devils are likely to return for him in January, but they are set to face competition from the Magpies.

The Tyneside outfit recently picked up their first win of the Premier League campaign, and they are now three points adrift of safety.

The club are expected to spend significantly after their takeover from a Saudi-led consortium, and it could begin at the turn of the year.

A number of top players are on their radar, but the onus remains on pursuing stars that have Premier League experience in their hands.

Trippier could be available for around £25m in January. The England international is set to enter the final 18 months of his contract.
