Reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano has clarified that there is no truth to the speculation linking Liverpool with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The Netherlands international was tipped to join Manchester United during last summer's transfer window after they agreed a fee of around £72 million.

However, a transfer did not materialise at all. The 25-year-old made it clear that he did not want to leave Barcelona amid their financial problems.

De Jong has since been in-and-out of the starting line-up, but Romano insists that 'nothing has changed' with respect to the player's transfer stance.

Liverpool were recently touted to make a January swoop for the Dutchman, but Romano has rubbished those claims in an update earlier today.

He said: "Nothing has changed on Frenkie de Jong's side. As he said also in the last days and weeks, he wanted to stay at Barcelona and there are still no changes."

Jurgen Klopp's side have made a dreadful start to the current campaign and they are presently eighth on the table with 13 points on the board.

Their midfield displays have been far from convincing and it won't be a surprise if Klopp urges the hierarchy to make a marquee winter signing.
