Manchester United are prepared to release midfielder Fred on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The Brazilian has been a key player for the Red Devils over the past four years, but his game time has reduced this campaign.

He is currently behind Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay in the pecking order for the central midfield positions.

According to The Guardian, manager Erik ten Hag values the Brazilian's contributions, but does not want to keep him next term.

The 29-year-old's current deal expires at the end of the campaign, but the club have the option to keep him for another 12 months.

Ten Hag has reportedly instructed the club to decline the renewal as he is prepared to replace the Brazilian with a summer signing.

United are looking at multiple midfielders across Europe. They could still revive their long-term interest in Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong.

De Jong declined to leave Barcelona after a transfer fee was agreed with United and the club may try again at the end of the season.
