Manchester United have joined Barcelona in the race to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi next year.

The Red Devils have strengthened their midfield this season with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, but they are eyeing another young signing.

Zubimendi has been earmarked as the top target and AS claim that they are ready to meet the €60m release clause on his current deal.

United monitored the 23-year-old when he was playing against them this term, but they are yet to make any form of contact with Sociedad.

It remains to be seen whether the club will consider signing him in January.

United currently have Scott McTominay and Fred as back-up midfielders and Zubimendi's arrival could possibly see one of them leaving.

Fred seems the likely candidate with his contract expiring next summer. Zubimendi would be a superb acquisition for the Mancunian giants.

He is terrific with his defensive attributes and has also caught the eye with his distribution. He tends to prefer playing as a holding midfielder.
