Liverpool beat Man Utd to Cody Gakpo transfer

Cody Gakpo news

Gakpo signs for Liverpool

Liverpool have beaten Manchester United to the signing of PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo during the January transfer window.

United had been touted as favourites to land him next month and it was recently claimed that talks were underway with PSV over the fee.

However, their plans have been shattered by their arch-rivals, who have hijacked the deal. The Reds have agreed to pay an initial €45m.

Gakpo has also accepted personal terms over a six-year contract with Jurgen Klopp's side. He could be formally signed by the club within 48 hours.

This is a huge transfer blow for United, who are searching for a new centre-forward to replace Cristiano Ronaldo following his release.

Gakpo is predominantly a left-winger by trade but manager Erik ten Hag had plans of playing him up front, had he joined United.

Ten Hag will be deeply disappointed by the setback and it remains to be seen how United react. They need to find a quick alternative.
