Manchester United have reportedly intensified talks to sign Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez this winter.

The Red Devils are long-term admirers of the Argentine and they were initially interested in him during his River Plate days.

They refused to sign him for just €10m last summer, but are now prepared to break the bank to bring the player to Old Trafford.

According to O Jogo, talks are underway between United and Benfica. The Red Devils are determined to sign the 21-year-old.

Their initial plan was to pursue Fernandez in the summer but that has changed amid Liverpool's interest in signing him next month.

Jurgen Klopp's side recently beat United to the signing of Cody Gakpo and the Red Devils are desperate to avoid another repeat.

Benfica are yet to set an asking price for the World Cup winner, but it is reported that United may have to trigger the buy-out clause.

The figure in the clause currently stands at €120 million.
