Joao Gomes on Newcastle United radar

Joao Gomes is the top target for Newcastle United's management team in the January transfer window, as the 21-year-old midfielder appears to be ready to leave Brazilian side Flamengo in favour of a transfer to the Toon Army. Joao Gomes will reportedly arrive at St James Park in a deal worth a total of $25 million.

Newcastle have caused a stir this season having built a side with the best defence in the Premier League and the great form of Joelinton and Miguel Almiron alongside Callum Wilson. Last week, Newcastle held Arsenal to a 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium, proving that the Toon Army are amongst the best teams in the Premier League.

The club's ownership, the public investment fund of Saudi Arabia, are said to be ready to spend close to £100 million during the transfer window if necessary, and Joao Gomes could be the first transfer target.

Joao Gomes is primarily a central midfielder, but can also play on the left or in defensive midfield. In his time at Flamengo, he has won the Brazilian championship twice. The player has two and a half years remaining on his contract.
