Erik ten Hag on Varane's situation

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has spoken on the situation of Raphael Varane ahead of the Premier League meeting at Everton.

The Red Devils have won their last two league games and will be eyeing a third successive win when they face the Toffees on the road.

In today's press conference, Ten Hag was posed with several questions by the media and one of those was centered around Varane's lack of game time.

The centre-back has been a regular on the bench for the past few matches with Harry Maguire preferred over him for a starting berth.

In his response, Ten Hag said that Varane is a very important player in the squad but he has to deal with the internal competition at the club.

He said via United's official website: "Very important player, but there's internal competition and there should be at a top club, as we are."

"And when you decide on two players who do brilliant - Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire - you also have to make a choice for that position."

Varane has been linked with a move away from United in January. Bayern and several Saudi Arabian clubs are keeping a close watch on him.

If his situation does not improve by the New Year, he could realistically push for an exit. United value him at around £25 million.
