Mikel Arteta wants Arsenal to sign Real Sociedad star

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reportedly wants the club to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino this summer.

The Gunners are currently on the cusp of landing Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna. The defender is expected to join by this week.

The club will then concentrate on other targets and The Athletic claim that a new central midfielder is among the priorities for Arteta.

Martin Zubimendi was on the club's radar for some time, but reports now claim that his teammate Merino is the prime transfer choice.

Merino is not a strong ball-playing midfielder, but he has caught the eye with his strong defensive skills and line breaking passes too.

His forward-minded playing style has grabbed the attention of the Gunners boss and he could be available on the cheap this summer.

Merino has entered the final year of his contract with Sociedad and he could be available for a cut-price fee of around £21 million.

Borussia Dortmund are also keen on re-signing their former midfielder, but Arsenal manager Arteta has already held talks to persuade Merino.
