Arsenal prepare firm offer to sign 28yo midfielder

Arsenal are preparing a formal offer to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, according to Noticias de Gipuzkoa.

The Gunners have already finalised personal terms with the Spanish star and they are now working on a deal for his services.

The club are yet to make an approach to Sociedad, but it could happen soon amid Liverpool's interest in Martin Zubimendi.

Arsenal's hierarchy and Merino's entourage are afraid that the midfielder's move could be blocked if Zubimendi joins the Reds.

With this in mind, the Gunners are expected to make a firm offer in the coming days to secure a transfer agreement.

Atletico and Barcelona are also interested in Merino, but the 28-year-old has made it clear that he wants to join Arsenal.

Merino has personally spoken with manager Mikel Arteta and the Gunners boss has revealed his plans for his compatriot.

Arsenal are likely to pay around £21m for the ex-Newcastle man. Merino is said to be excited about returning to England.
