Newcastle star confirms he was quite close to joining Chelsea

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has revealed that he was quite close to joining Chelsea during his time at Everton.

The 23-year-old was a promising prospect in his time at Goodison Park but eyebrows were raised when Chelsea were interested in signing him.

A transfer did not materialise in the summer of 2022 and Gordon eventually ended up securing a move to the Magpies in January 2023.

Gordon barely impressed in his debut season for the Tyneside outfit, but he has since developed into one of the best wingers in the league.

Speaking about the Chelsea interest, Gordon said that he was desperate to leave at the time and was open to working with Thomas Tuchel.

He said: "It was quite close to be honest [joining Chelsea]. I was desperate to go at the time and work with him [Thomas Tuchel] especially. It was a big opportunity for me that didn’t end up happening."

Gordon is currently one of the first names on the teamsheet for Newcastle. He has registered 15 goals and 12 assists for the club thus far.
