Arteta sends message to Martinelli after Athletic win
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has heaped praise on Gabriel Martinelli following the club's 2-0 Champions League win over Athletic Bilbao on the road.
The Gunners started their European campaign against Athletic at San Mames this evening. They had a difficult first half where they could not create any big openings.
However, there was an improved display after the half-time interval and Martinelli was one of those who stood up, coming off the bench to replace Eberechi Eze.
The Brazilian opened the scoring for the Gunners in the 72nd minute after getting behind Athletic's defence before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Unai Simon.
Prior to stoppage time, Martinelli made a terrific run towards the byline before providing an assist for Leandro Trossard. The Belgian scored after a big deflection.
Speaking after the game, Arteta said that Martinelli fully deserved the man of the match, given his attitude, commitment and positivity on the playing field today.
Arteta said: "He fully deserved it. I adore Gabi, his attitude, commitment, positivity, what he’s willing to do for the team. I’m so happy he was important in the two actions."
