Chelsea make first move to sign Xabi Alonso

Chelsea have made initial contact with Xabi Alonso over taking charge as their new head coach, according to David Ornstein.

The Blues parted ways with manager Liam Rosenior last month, and they are in the process of recruiting a new head coach at the helm.

Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola was leading the race earlier last week, but the Blues are now leaning towards recruiting Alonso instead.

The former Liverpool midfielder is also tempted by the Blues project and it remains to be seen whether a final agreement can be reached.

Liverpool have also been linked with their former player, but they are not looking to dismiss Arne Slot from the managerial position.

Slot has been under immense pressure over the course of the season, but the hierarchy are prepared to place trust in him for another year.

The Dutchman guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut campaign and that has provided him extra time in the job.
