Mika Godts wanted by Newcastle and Sunderland

Newcastle and Sunderland are both being linked with Ajax winger Mika Godts, in what could become one of the more intriguing transfer battles of the summer.
The 20-year-old Belgian has been outstanding for Ajax this season and is now being watched by clubs across Europe. Godts is mainly a left winger, but he can also play centrally or from the right, which makes him especially attractive to Premier League sides looking for flexible attacking options. He is quick, direct, technically sharp and carries the ball with real confidence.
Newcastle's interest makes plenty of sense. Eddie Howe's side need more attacking depth, especially with European ambitions and the constant physical demands of the Premier League. Godts would offer another explosive wide option, and his ability to beat defenders one-v-one could make him a natural fit in a team that likes intensity and speed in transition.
Sunderland's involvement is the more surprising angle, but also an exciting one. If they can offer a clearer pathway to regular minutes, they may hope to convince Godts that the Stadium of Light is the right place for the next step in his development. For a young winger, playing every week can sometimes be more attractive than joining a bigger club and waiting for chances.
His season stats show exactly why the interest is growing. Godts has produced around 17 goals and 12 assists in 31 Eredivisie appearances for Ajax, making him one of the most productive young forwards in the Netherlands. He has also created more than 70 chances and completed more than 70 successful take-ons, which highlights both sides of his game: creativity and dribbling threat.
That blend is what makes him so exciting. Godts is not just a winger who hugs the touchline. He can come inside, combine quickly, shoot from dangerous areas and open up defenders with close control. He has drawn comparisons with Eden Hazard because of his Belgian background, low centre of gravity and ability to glide past opponents, although he is still very much developing his own identity.
The fee could be significant. Ajax know they have one of Europe's most wanted young attackers, and figures of up to €75m have been mentioned. A more realistic deal may depend on how strong the bidding becomes, but Newcastle and Sunderland would both know this is not a cheap gamble.
