Chelsea make surprise move for Arsenal midfielder

Chelsea have made a surprise move for Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi as they prepare for the departure of Enzo Fernandez.

Fernandez is widely expected to leave the Blues. Manchester City are preparing a big-money offer which will likely be accepted.

The Blues are looking for a ready-made replacement, but they certainly won't be signing Zubimendi before the transfer window closes.

The west London giants made an enquiry for the 27-year-old earlier this week, but the proposal was quickly dismissed by the Gunners.

Blues manager Xabi Alonso shares a good bond with the Spaniard, but the Gunners have no plans to entertain his sale this summer.

Manager Mikel Arteta recently spoke about the importance of Zubimendi and he is determined to keep hold of his compatriot this term.

Zubimendi's playing time is likely to be reduced this campaign after the arrival of midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United.

Zubimendi has come on as a substitute for Arsenal this season.
