Ronaldo finishes off old club

Man Utd got their Champions League campaign off to a perfect start with a 1-0 win at Sporting Lisbon, thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's diving header against his former club. Man Utd held on despite pressure, and grabbed the only goal of the game in the 62nd minute.

Ronaldo warned his old employers that he would be playing at his best, and he proved that as he matched his words with deeds as he arrived with perfect timing to finish off Wes Brown's cross to give United the perfect Champions League start.

Ronaldo's celebrations were rather quiet, and just a small double-fisted salute from the Portuguese winger may have even indicated somewhat of an apology to the Sporting Lisbon side. The fans even applauded when his name was announced.

Lisbon were no walkover, however, and Liedson, Marat Izmailov and Leandro Romagnoli all tried their luck at various times but thankfully Van der Sar was in the correct position on each occasion.

The Dutch keeper was in good form tonight, and the importance of his saves will now be realised as Man Utd held on to scrape the three points.

United could have increased their lead late on through Ronaldo and Saha, but it mattered not as the three points were secured.
