Arsenal captain Vermaelen heading to Napoli?

24 May 2013 - 06:04

Out of favour Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has been sensationally linked with a move away from the Emirates; Italian club Napoli are reportedly desperate to bring the Belgian international to Serie A this summer.

 • Fabrizio Romano updates on Nicolas Jackson's future at Chelsea
 • Man Utd interested in signing Aurelien Tchouameni
 • Vermaelen started the season as captain and first choice defender for the Gunners but in recent months Arsene Wenger preferred Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny to the Gunners' captain.
With the duo of Koscielny and Mertesacker impressing recent months - conceeding only 5 goals in 10 games and seeing Arsenal through a run of 8 wins and 2 draws in their last 10 Premier League games - Vermaelen is expected to be confined to the bench next season as well.
It is a drastic switch in fortune for the centre back, who last season had been voted as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
Napoli have reportedly been in contact with Arsenal and are preparing an offer of around 15 million Euros for the defender.
