Reading nab 3 points

Reading nab 3 points

27 October 2007 - 16:35

Substitute Shane Long needed just seconds to net the goal that gave Reading a deserved 2-1 victory over Newcastle at the Madejski Stadium. Sam Allardyce's side thought they had grasped a point when Michael Duberry's own goal cancelled out Dave Kitson's opener.

  • Gabriel Magalhaes to sign new Arsenal deal

  • Reading took the lead early in the second half after Stephen Hunt played the ball into the penalty area for Kevin Doyle to flick around the corner, Dave Kitson turning and curling the ball into the top corner past a helpless Shay Given.

Newcastle had few chances to score and were given a lifeline when Emre's free kick into the near post was flicked on by Alan Smith and turned into his own net by a bemused Michael Duberry.

Then as Newcastle dominated the later stages of the game and looking like they were going to go and take a victory, Shane Long came on as a substitute and within no more than thirty seconds of coming on the pitch became the hero for the home side. Nicky Shorey played a route one ball up to Dave Kitson and the Irishman smashed the ball into the roof of the Newcastle net to grab a much needed win for Steve Coppell's men.
