Liverpool destroyed the Champions League goalscoring record held by Arsenal - set only two weeks ago - as they decimated Besiktas 8-0 at Anfield and instigated some kind of revenge after the Turkish side defeated them 2-1 last time around.
It was extraordinary stuff as the Reds produced football of the finest variety to turn over the Turkish giants.
Anything less than three points would have surely have seen Liverpool out of the Champions League, but Liverpool responded in the finest fashion to turn over a side who made Liverpool look like schoolboys in Turkey.
It was a fantastic team performance as Benayoun grabbed three goals, Peter Crouch got two, Benayoun got two and Steven Gerrard got one.
Peter Crouch performed admirably early on, winning and taking a quick free-kick, before racing into the box to meet John-Arse Riiseâs cross with a firm header then he should have had hit the target with.
But he got his reward on 19 minutes as he found his left-foot shot was well parried by the keeper, but no defender could react quicker than the much-maligned forward who raised the roof off Anfield by slotting away the rebound.
Voronin then picked out Benayoun unmarked at the back-post, who in turn controlled the ball instantly before lashing a half-volley into the far-corner of the net in the 32nd minute.
It was an outstanding first half performance from Liverpool, but nobody would have predicted the superb stuff to come after the break.
Benayoun stole in unnoticed to tap in the rebound from a thunderous Riise shot that could only be parried by the keeper in the 52nd minute.
Gerrard then finished off a fluid passing move by bursting into the box, and then firing a shot that deflected off Diatta and into the net.
On came Ryan Babel - and what an impression he has left. Babel made an instant impact as he turned Benayounâs square ball across the goal in by a deft flick with the ball in between his legs in the 78th minute - probably the goal of the night.
Babel added his second as the hapless defence scored in the 81st. Then came the goal - the record breaker - from Peter Crouch. The much-maligned forward showed his true class as arrived to head in Benayoun's cross in the 89th to send Anfield into ecstasy. Fantastic performance.
