Arsenal make it to Champions League group stages

28 August 2013 - 16:41

A brace from Welshman Aaron Ramsey secured a 5-0 aggregate win for Arsenal over Turkish side Fenerbahce at the Emirates Stadium. This secured their 16th straight Champions League campaign. This also gave the Gunners their 12th victory out of 12 Champions League play off games they've contested in.

  • Omari Hutchinson wants to continue at Ipswich Town

  • Ramsey scored once either side of the break, his first coming after taking advantage from Caner Erkin's defensive error. 18 minutes from time, the Welshman volleyed into the bottom left corner to ensure his side's progressing into the group stages of the Champions League.

German striker Lukas Podolski limped off with a hamstring injury which manager Arsene Wenger said would keep him out for at least 3 weeks, while Jack Wilshere also suffered a knock but was said to be fit for selection in the Gunner's next game against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

This win for Arsenal spared UEFA their blushes, with Fenerbahce's appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport is set to be heard on wednesday, and with their ban potentially having a chance of being upheld, a win for them would have been troublesome and could have had negative consequences on the competition.
