Argentina are the third team to have qualified for the World Cup semi-finals, after a 1-0 victory over Belgium. The European side very nearly equalised at the end, but Argentina held on for a memorable win.

  • In a game where Gonzalo Higuain stepped up after a miserable performance so far in the tournament, this tie will be remembered not for its chances but for what could have been for the Belgians. Dominated for the first 60 minutes, the Belgians pushed on for the final 30, very nearly scoring an equaliser.

Argentina took the lead when Angel Di Maria drove a ball into the area, the chance deflected towards Gonzalo Higuain. On the volley the Napoli man struck past Thibaut Courtois to put the South Americans ahead. Belgium were quiet for the most of the initial stages of the game, in fact their only notable chance came in the 43rd minute from Kevin Mirallas.

Towards the end, Belgium could have scored as a crucial chance from Romelu Lukaku went wide of the post. Argentina now await the winner of the Costa Rica vs Netherlands game.
